ABOUT THE DISEASE OF ADDICTION

The human brain is incredibly complex—and that is why addiction treatment should be as well. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has proven that addiction is a complex brain disease characterized by compulsive, at times, uncontrollable, drug craving, seeking, and use that persist despite potentially devastating consequences. Drug use often results in rewarding effects such as rapid upsurges of dopamine. This neurochemical causes stimulating feelings of pleasure, which ultimately motivates future behaviors. This is where addiction begins.
Repeated exposure of certain drugs can cause an interruption of brain circuits involved with an individual’s memory and control of future behaviors. Throughout the drug use process, individuals gain memories of drug experiences that trigger cravings. In addition to memories—people, places, and things associated with drug use can have similar effects. As a person increases usage, her reward circuitry within the brain becomes numbed; nothing else can compare to the powerful effect of the drugs. Addiction is a brain disease.
Due to the complex nature of drug use, addiction, and brain function, it is exceedingly important to treat the disease in an involved manner. The experts at Voyage approach all of our services from an attachment perspective. We believe that addiction, mental illness, and trauma have robbed individuals of the ability to attach in healthy ways. Through our programs we assist each individual in finding better ways of attaching to themselves & others. We fight the power of addiction.
WHAT MAKES OUR TREATMENT WORK?
Our therapeutic services are based on a gender-specific and trauma-informed adaptation of the Integrated Dual Disorders Treatment model. This model was developed at Dartmouth some years ago for the treatment of individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. Rather than isolating mental health or substance abuse, we treat both issues and their interactions in a non-stigmatizing, non-judgmental approach.
We believe that everyone is deserving of a healthy and happy life. Our treatment will get you on the path to a successful & fulfilling recovery. Addiction is a disease that can be cured. There is hope—and we are here to help.
